Faith First: What Happens When You Put God at the Center of Everything?
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33
We live in a world that constantly tells us what should come first.
Career. Money. Success. Relationships. Recognition. Comfort. Goals.
None of those things are automatically wrong. The problem comes when good things begin taking the place that belongs to God.
Putting faith over everything does not mean ignoring your responsibilities. It does not mean refusing to plan, work hard, pursue goals, care for your family, or make wise decisions.
It means God becomes the foundation underneath all of it.
Faith First Changes the Order
Jesus said:
“Seek first the kingdom of God…”
Notice the word first.
Jesus wasn't saying that nothing else matters. He was teaching us the proper order.
When God is first, everything else is viewed differently.
Your career becomes more than a paycheck.
Your relationships become more than what you can receive from another person.
Your money becomes something to steward rather than worship.
Your goals become something you surrender to God rather than something you chase at any cost.
Faith first means asking:
“God, what do You want me to do with this?”
before asking:
“What do I want?”
Faith Over Everything Doesn't Mean Life Gets Easy
Putting God first does not guarantee that every decision becomes simple.
Sometimes faith will lead you somewhere uncomfortable.
Sometimes obedience will require patience.
Sometimes you will pray and still have questions.
Sometimes God's direction will conflict with what seems easiest, fastest, or most popular.
Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Faith over everything means trusting God's wisdom even when your own understanding feels incomplete.
What Is Actually First in Your Life?
Most of us would say that God is important to us.
But there is a difference between God being important and God being first.
One way to tell the difference is to look at where we turn first.
When you're worried, where do you go first?
When you receive an opportunity, who do you consult first?
When your plans fall apart, what do you depend on first?
When you're making a major decision, does prayer come before the decision—or after you've already decided what you want to do?
These aren't questions meant to produce guilt.
They're opportunities for alignment.
Let Your Faith Become the Filter
Putting God first doesn't mean adding one more religious activity to an already busy schedule.
It means letting your faith become the filter through which you approach everything else.
Before reacting — pray.
Before compromising — remember who you represent.
Before chasing an opportunity — ask whether it aligns with your values.
Before allowing fear to control you — remember Who you trust.
Before measuring your worth by your success — remember Who created you.
Faith isn't meant to occupy one section of your life.
It should influence the whole thing.
When Everything Feels Urgent
Life has a way of making everything feel important at the same time.
Bills need to be paid.
Work needs to be completed.
Family needs your attention.
Problems need answers.
Goals need action.
But urgency can easily rearrange our priorities.
That's why seeking God first is intentional.
Sometimes putting faith first looks as simple as stopping before the day begins and saying:
“God, order my steps today.”
Not because you expect God to remove every challenge—but because you don't want to face those challenges without His direction.
Faith First Is a Daily Decision
Putting God first isn't something you decide once.
It's something you practice.
Every day brings another opportunity to choose:
Fear or faith.
Control or surrender.
Approval or obedience.
My way or God's way.
Psalm 37:5 says:
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act.”
That's what faith over everything looks like.
Not perfection.
Not pretending you never struggle.
But continually bringing your plans, decisions, fears, relationships, ambitions, and future back under God's direction.
Faith in Action
This week, identify one area of your life where you have been trying to control the outcome.
Maybe it's your career.
Your finances.
Your family.
Your health.
Your business.
Your future.
Instead of asking God merely to bless the plan you've already made, ask:
“God, what would it look like to put You first in this?”
Then be willing to listen.

Faith over everything doesn't mean everything else disappears.
It means everything else finds its proper place.
Your goals still matter.
Your responsibilities still matter.
Your relationships still matter.
Your future still matters.
But none of them were designed to carry the weight of being your foundation.
God was.
Put God first. Let everything else find its place.
